Franschhoek (South Africa) to Hooke (Dorset, UK) - Three Generations across Africa
The Aim
Three generations of the Cooper family decided one evening in October 2010 that now was the optimum time to fulfil their dreams of driving the length of Africa and hence the HOEK to HOOKE journey was born.
The journey will begin from Mandy and Pete’s (grandparents) new house in FranschHOEK, SA and hopefully end back at the family business and home for Sarah and Chris (parents) and their children, HOOKE Court in Dorset, UK.
Mandy and Pete set up the family business, Hooke Court Residential Study Centre in 1994. In 1996 they opened a small independent school, Hooke Court School. In 1998 Sarah and Chris, also both qualified teachers came along and gradually took over the reigns of the business allowing Pete and Mandy to semi retire! HookeCourt.
As all 4 grown ups have spent their lives educating children and providing facilities within which children can be educated an important aspect to the journey was to find a way to help children in this country to empathise with children’s lives in Africa. To further enhance this we will be able to present the various aspects associated with our travel from a child’s perspective.
Through our links with the schools that visit Hooke Court Study Centre, we see thousands of children each year whom we hope will join us on our journey to gain a more detailed understanding into different cultures, geography, history and politics. Blogs will be updated on a regular basis and displays at Hooke Court will track our route providing information as we progress. Blogs
Whilst all this is happening, Chris a Geography teacher will be skype video calling the children in Hooke Court School whenever possible to teach the children all about the East African Rift Valley at first hand! Any other school wishing to participate in these ‘lessons’ is more than welcome to do so!
The issues of poverty and deprivation will be high on the agenda. We hope to not only raise awareness of these issues but also involve children directly in helping alleviate, to some extent, the plight of just a few children along our route. Sarah and Chris’s two older children – Thomas (aged 8) and Florence (aged 6) will be posting all our visits onto the blog for children here to follow. We want children from England to know exactly where their money is going and how they will be helping children less fortunate than themselves. We will send as much first hand information back to the school as possible. Charity.
